When I look back, I don’t just see babies and bottles.
I see patterns. I see lessons.
And I see just how much this work still matters — maybe now more than ever.

So I thought I’d share a few truths that have become crystal clear after walking through thousands of feeding journeys.

1. Moms blame themselves way too quickly.

Pain, low supply, fussy babies, latching problems — I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard:

“I must be doing something wrong.”
“My body just isn’t working.”
“I’m failing.”

No. You’re not.

Story One: From Pain to Peace

The first time I met Sarah, she was clutching her newborn and curling her toes from pain with every latch. She’d been told by three different nurses that her latch “looked great,” but she was crying through every feed.

Within minutes of our session, I saw what was missing.
The baby was showing signs of a tongue restriction. Sarah was overcompensating by hunching her body, trying to force a deeper connection.

We made adjustments. She cried again — this time, because it didn’t hurt.

Story Two: The Pumping Puzzle

Then there was Amanda — a NICU mom who had been exclusively pumping for weeks and still felt like she was barely keeping up.

No one had checked her pump settings, her flange size, or explained why her milk output kept dropping. She had been doing everything “right,” but her plan wasn’t built for her body.

We made three simple tweaks to her schedule, pump settings, and flange fit. Within a week, she was pumping more than enough — and finally meeting her baby’s needs.

Story Three: A Late Start, Not a Lost Cause

Finally, there’s Rachel — a second-time mom who thought it was “too late” to fix breastfeeding because her baby was already two months old.

Her baby was fussy at the breast. She was supplementing but wanted to try again. Everyone told her it probably wouldn’t work.

But she wasn’t ready to give up — and neither was I.

Over the course of four visits, we slowly rebuilt her supply, retrained the baby's latch, and weaned off bottles. Last time I heard from her, she was exclusively breastfeeding and thriving.

Late doesn’t mean it's over. It just means we start where you are.

The Window That Gets Missed

By Day 3, milk is increasing, babies feed more frequently, nipple soreness peaks and parents no longer have support from hospital staff. By Day 4 or 5, if things are off — shallow latch, poor transfer, pain, supply concerns — they usually get worse, not better, on their own.

But this is also where I’ve seen support change everything:

A better position.
A deeper latch.
A clear explanation of what’s happening and why it feels so hard.
A plan that’s simple, real, and doesn’t make you feel like a failure.

Sometimes the biggest shift is just hearing someone say:
“You’re not doing it wrong. You just haven’t had the right help yet.”

What I Wish More People Knew

Most moms don’t call for help until they’re already in a spiral — cracked nipples, weight checks, pump schedules, tears.

If more families knew how much easier it can be when support starts early — I truly believe it would change breastfeeding rates across the board.

If you’re a new parent, or you love one, here’s what I’ll always recommend:

• Don’t wait for it to fall apart.
  

• Have support on deck before the baby arrives.
  

• If you’re past Day 1 already, it’s not too late — but it is the right time.

So… What Is Normal?

Here’s how I break it down with my clients:

• Initial sensitivity — Yes. Especially in the first few days as your body adjusts.

• Soreness right at latch that fades within seconds — Often happens, but typically avoidable with a deep latch.

• Burning, stabbing, or lingering pain after feeds — Not normal.

• Visible damage (cracks, bleeding, blisters) — Not normal.

• Pain that makes you dread feeding — Not normal. And not okay to ignore.

Why Pain Happens (And What To Check)

Pain isn’t a diagnosis — it’s a signal. It’s telling us something’s not working. Some common culprits:

• Shallow latch

• Tongue tie or restricted oral tissue

• Fast or slow letdown

• Poor positioning

• Incorrect pump flange sizing

• Thrush

• Vasospasm

Pain means the system needs a tweak.

What Actually Helps

If you’re reading this in pain, here’s what I’d tell you in an appointment:

1. Stop suffering quietly. Reach out to a board certified lactation consultant.

2. Don’t ignore your body. You’re allowed to question what’s “normal.”

3. There are solutions. We can adjust positioning, troubleshoot the latch, do oral evaluations, and/or modify your feeding plan — often in the first visit.

4. Give permission to pivot.
